CHAPTER 14
Georgia waited until she heard Stephanieâs light snores and climbed out of bed. Her roommate had tried to stay up all night to catch some romantic scene between Georgia and Victor but fell asleep just before midnight.
Georgia pulled on her shoes. If only her friend knew how pissed Victor was at her. He rowed his canoe up to her and Jason and practically dragged them on board, angrily rowing them to shore. Then he rescued their upturned canoe with three other campers. It had been too heavy to turn over, as it was filled with water. They had to pull it back to the shore.
Georgia and Jason had shamefully snuck back to camp during their effort. They figured it was better to be gone when Victor got back.
There would be no romantic scenes between Victor and her tonight. Georgia was on a forgiveness mission. That is, if Victor decided to meet her at all. She was tired of asking for forgiveness anyway. She had never apologized to so many people in her life, but she kept messing up at camp because she didnât belong. Maybe she should point this out to Gerry in the morning.
The thought of her morning therapy session made her anxious. Georgia pushed it out of mind and concentrated on not tripping on the uneven ground in the dark. One step at a time. Thatâs how she would make it to the bridge in the pitch-black night, thatâs how she would make it through therapy tomorrow, thatâs how she would make it through camp. At the end of the whole ordeal she would have her inheritance. She had no idea what she would do with two million dollars, besides buy Jason vintage Barbies, but she had time to figure it out.
She saw Victor standing at midnight like he normally did, forearms resting on the bridge, leaning forward, looking at the lake. Georgia walked toward him. She had never felt this way about a man before. All butterflies in the chest, stomach in knots. She should have felt this way with Mike, but he was always telling her what she wanted to hear, kissing her butt, and taking the perfect Instagram photo. She knew he was fake even then but refused to admit it to herself. Now that he cheated on her, it was hard to deny the truth. Her two-year relationship with Mike was as superficial as the highlights in his hair. It was the longest relationship of her life, and it hadnât been that deep.
I was more committed to my Starbucks career.
Georgia stood next to Victor and assumed the positionâelbows on the bridge, chin in hands. She added a sigh for dramatic effect, but also because it was what she was currently feeling inside.
âShouldnât I be the one sighing?â Victor turned to her. âMy arms are still sore from dragging your thousand-pound canoe to the shore.â
Victor was waiting for his apology. Georgia bit back a smile and gave the man what he wanted. âIâm sorry, Victor,â she said sweetly.
